When we think of the environment, we sometimes imagine it as what exists beyond us rather than seeing ourselves as a part of it, influencing it and being influenced by it. In contemporary life, other people mediate our relationship with the environment through water and fuel supply, public land and private property, making our personal relationship with the environment more abstract than felt. How can we define our relationship with the environment in ways that make sense for how we live now while also challenging us to think about how we live?
