Tell your Story: Intergenerational Story Exchange
“ This was the first time doing anything like this. It was lovely to get to know teenagers in my community as I would not know many young people. I feel I have made new friends”An older person participant
The Tell Your Story project took place between September 2017 and May 2018 with the aim to build community between older citizens and youths (12 to 17 years) in Limerick through the medium of storytelling.
Narrative 4 recruited older people who were interested in storytelling from a number of community organisations in the city and county. With a total of 180 participants, involving 5 schools – Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh, Desmond College, Bruree NS, Scoil Mhuire agus Íde, Desmond complex and Friar’s Gate Theatre, this intergenerational Story Exchange allowed different generations to bridge the gap and see the world through the eyes of another, to right misconceptions and shatter stereotypes, to learn from each other and share knowledge in a truly unique and special way.
A 16 year old from Garryowen re-tells the story of an 80 year old from his community and vice versa. Without exception the older people commented on how smart and open the students were. The image of the bored teenager became replaced by a delight in how ‘smart’ and engaging the young people were.
