Stories – Overcoming Distance and Age

Man and boy taking part

Recently, Narrative 4 delivered two projects which have highlighted the power of stories to bridge any divide: Embers of Change and the Wisdom Exchange. Embers of Change brought together students from Dublin and Donegal, while the Wisdom Exchange brought primary school students together with older participants from a Men’s Shed in Limerick. Despite the gap in distance or age, on both occasions the participants were able to connect through sharing stories with each other.

Embers of Change

This project brought TY and 5th year students from Loreto College, Milford, in Donegal together with students from St. Mary’s Holy Faith Secondary School, Glasnevin, in Dublin at the Monaghan Peace Campus. The participants started off feeling nervous, but began to interact more through icebreakers and food before taking part in a Narrative 4 Story Exchange, where they shared stories about ‘a time they felt at peace’. By the end of their time together, they went from being quiet and reserved to laughing and chatting freely.

The Wisdom Exchange

Bringing together students from Our Lady of Lourdes National School and adults from the Garryowen Men’s Shed in Limerick, the Wisdom Exchange demonstrated the ability of storytelling to bridge decades. Over the course of two sessions, the participants (who ranged in age from 10 years old to 74 years old) shared stories about happy memories and people who inspire them. The students from Our Lady of Lourdes NS opened up over the two sessions, while the adults from the men’s shed enjoyed sharing stories from their lives.

A highlight of the event was the connection made between John and Noor. In the first session where they were paired up together, they found that they both shared a love of Harry Potter and were able to talk about that shared interest, which is how John found out that despite reading all the books three times, Noor had never watched the movies. When they met for the second session, John brought with him his boxed set of all the Harry Potter movies to give to Noor. Beyond the stories that they shared during the exchange bringing them together, fictional stories demonstrated their ability to do it as well.

The importance of stories

In both events, the power of storytelling to forge connections across differences was evident. Whether it was distance or age that separated the participants, they were still able to communicate and connect with each other through the simple act of sharing stories. These events serve as a powerful reminder that the shortest distance between two people is a story.
